My yoga experience Kim * Jeong
I met yoga a long time ago when I was a newcomer to the society who had just graduated from college. My major was design and I looked for an authentic yoga center to relax my stiffened body caused by long hours of computer work due to the major¡¯s nature. Since I was a child, all kinds of workout were hard for me and I even had a painful time with sitting down having my back upright. To me, yoga was the first step to get through the pain of stiffness. In all ages, it is commonly said that health is important. However, I didn¡¯t have much interest in a relationship of yoga and health or the importance of health in life at that time. I strongly thought getting a disease is a fate and there was no choice but receiving treatment at a hospital when the disease is caught.
Indeed, I finished up daily yoga practice to escape from my stiff body just like a stick. But, none the more, my body that had been neglected over 20 years didn¡¯t become flexible quickly. The months passed since then¡¦. Some changes happened to the unexpected parts of my body. In those days, I had several physical problems and the most predominant symptoms were my irregular period and migraine. I menstruated one time or two times a year and had intense cramps. And I suffered from migraine for my whole life. I attended the hospital for many years for treatment, but I could hardly find the answer. I just reproached myself for being born with the body like that and I resigned myself thinking that it was an inevitable problem although I was anxious. I really didn¡¯t expect the puzzle of my body that I had for the years would be solved in a few months by doing yoga by chance just to relax my stiff body¡¦.
Since I started doing yoga, my period started after three months and it became regular like magic. Also, the intense cramps were reduced gradually. Through this experience, I realized for the first time that yoga practice had great effect on a physiological function of my body. My body was still stiff. However, since I was helped by yoga practice at unexpected parts of my body and as I added my yoga practice for one year and two years, I naturally came to be aware of the health of body and mind. Moreover, after running parallel with practicing yoga and eating natural hygiene, the disgusting migraine that visited me every other day was gone completely.
Recovering health like that is a harvest earned through yoga practice, but the richest harvest is my existing awareness about health was switched. I used to think ¡°Catching a disease is a fate.¡±, but now I think I am responsible for my health and I have to keep it by myself. Also, I came to think that I can govern my health with my habit and will power. In addition, I think it is a great luck that I have realized regular practice and regular life are very important for stability of body and mind.
Having the experience, now I¡¯m walking the way of a yoga instructor. There was unexpectedly no big conflict in putting down design which I thought my lifelong occupation and choosing yoga instead. The process of the yoga practice was natural and steady like water flow and I came to gain courage and confidence due to better health and consciousness although it was slow. That led me to the way of yoga naturally. And it was strange that the things that I used to think that I had to give up became the things that I don¡¯t need to give up anymore. It was like that at the same time I decided to be a yogini. Giving up is generated from having desire but my desire was decreased because of the little bit trained spirit. So, it naturally made giving up decreased.
Learning the things that are truly valuable to learn. Ruling my health by myself. And if you learn and master it properly you can share it with other people. It is yoga and yoga has wonderful contents!

Doesn¡¯t the problem of many people including me exist in ignoring foundation and only worrying about how to be used? Yoga is a useful expedient for developing the foundation well. It makes me look in quietly and filling my lacking part as well as drawing off the unnecessary part. It makes me make my proper note by providing the time to focus on myself. The use of since then will be come out naturally. I hope that many people will make their proper note through yoga and that all the notes will be gathered and will create a wonderful chord someday. |
